Why do I need corrective jaw surgery?

Dr. Harouni may suggest orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, to address various dental and skeletal abnormalities of the jaw and teeth.

A facial injury

An abnormal bite

Chronic jaw joint pain

A protruding or receding jaw

Difficulty biting or chewing food

Orthognathic surgery may be necessary for individuals with sleep apnea, a condition that results in temporary pauses in breathing during sleep. This type of corrective jaw surgery can help address various dental and skeletal abnormalities affecting the jaw and teeth.

What types of corrective jaw surgery are available?

Our oral surgeons are highly experienced in a variety of jaw surgeries. Depending on your specific needs, we can perform surgeries such as:

LeFort

This procedure, also referred to as upper jaw advancement, is used to correct a misaligned bite. Prior to and following this surgery, orthodontic treatment like braces is necessary to achieve optimal outcomes.

Sagittal split

This surgical procedure involves splitting the lower jaw to improve its position. It is a type of corrective jaw surgery that straightens jaw alignment and corrects tooth alignment issues.

Genioplasty

A genioplasty is a surgical procedure that can adjust the position of the chin to enhance jaw alignment. This surgery can improve both the function and appearance of the jaw and facial structure. We will assess your symptoms, conduct a physical exam, and review special X-rays to determine the most suitable corrective jaw surgery for you.

How do I prepare for corrective jaw surgery?

Before undergoing surgery, orthodontic treatment such as braces may be necessary to align your jaw. Our oral surgeons will collaborate with your orthodontist to determine the duration of orthodontic treatment required prior to surgery.

When you are prepared for the surgery, we will perform orthognathic surgery to realign your teeth. This procedure is typically done in a hospital under general anesthesia for your comfort. At Sam Harouni DDS and Gene Hughes DDS, we usually perform the surgery intraorally, without the need for incisions on your face.

After repositioning your jawbone, screws or wires may be used to secure your jaw in place and promote bone fusion over time. In some cases, additional bone from another part of your jaw may be necessary to support your teeth and facial structure.

Recovery time for this surgery can range from four to six weeks, and our doctors will provide a comprehensive aftercare plan to ensure proper healing and function of your jaw.
